Causewayside is a new Purpose-Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) development in Edinburgh which involves the removal of an existing office building to make way for a 174-bed student accommodation block. 

This project is a fine example of the benefit of working collaboratively with a skilled, multi-disciplined design team which includes jmarchitects, Gardiner & Theobald, Scott Hobbs Planning, Etive Consulting Engineers, KJ Tait Engineers, OFR Consultants, Sweco and re-form Landscape Architecture.

Working on behalf of Balfour Beatty Investments, Carbon Futures has been appointed as the Energy and Sustainability Consultant with a remit to develop the energy, environmental and decarbonisation / Net Zero strategies. 

Utilising techniques such as Operational Energy Modelling, Embodied / Whole Life Carbon Analysis, Daylight and Sunlight Impact Modelling, Overheating and Air Quality Modelling, our team of consultants will assist to measure and verify performance.

A fabric first-approach has been applied, with heat pump technology, Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR) and PV included in the energy strategy. Sustainable material selection alongside the design development of the sub- and super-structure has been rigorously assessed in order to minimise embodied carbon and deliver a low-carbon building. Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) modelling was undertaken in parallel with energy and carbon assessments to ensure the provision of healthy, comfortable, and high-performing spaces, supporting a balanced and holistic approach to sustainability.
