______ Project Overview
Calton Village is a new affordable housing development designed by Hypostyle Architects providing 254 homes for social and mid-market rent featuring a mix of 1–2 bedroom flats and 3-4 bedroom houses. Transforming a previously vacant site in Glasgow’s East End, the development is a joint venture between Wheatley Group and McTaggart Construction, supported by Glasgow City Council’s Affordable Housing Supply Programme. The first phase was completed in April 2025, with 123 high-quality energy-efficient homes handed over to delighted new residents. Construction of the second phase is now well underway and due to complete in 2026.
______ Our Scope
Carbon Futures, as Energy Consultant, were involved from inception through to completion, working alongside the design team to provide practical and affordable energy strategy advice for the project. This involved developing a detailed energy strategy to achieve compliance with Glasgow City Council’s SG5 Resource Management policy (Gold Hybrid – Aspect Gold Level 1 & Aspect Silver Level 2-8 under Section 7 (Sustainability) of the Building Standards) whilst facilitating the use of the proposed district heating system. Additional services provided by Carbon Futures included provision of a Statement on Energy for Planning and Building Standards compliance through provision of an Energy Design Analysis, SAP Calculations, Approved Certifier of Design (Energy) certification, Psi-value Calculations to assess thermal bridging, U-value Calculations to determine performance of the external fabric and Energy Performance Certificates & Sustainability Labels at completion.

Calton Village is home to the largest district heating system in Glasgow, operated from a central hub to deliver energy-efficient heating and hot water to all dwelling within the development
The properties include a mix of Decentralised & Centralised Mechanical Extract Ventilation (dMEV/cMEV) and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR). 
All blocks feature Photovoltaic Panels (PV) linked to the Landlord Supply to offset carbon emissions.
All dwelling benefit from Waste Water Heat Recovery (WWHR) to facilitate compliance with Aspect Silver Level 3 by providing 5-20% of the dwelling hot water demand from water that would otherwise go down the plug hole.
