Calderwood
Introduction
Calderwood is a new village within West Lothian covering over 138 hectares. The 80 hectare extension to the development, falls within The City of Edinburgh Council’s jurisdiction and could therefore be required to comply with the proposed City Plan policies.
Remit
Appointed by Stirling Developments Carbon Futures were commissioned to undertake a strategic review of The City of Edinburgh Council’s Main Issues Report (Choices for City Plan 2030: Preparing the next local development plan for Edinburgh) and investigate how the proposed carbon reduction requirements will impact the extension to the Calderwood development. As part of the study, we considered the viability of various centralised and decentralised technologies, such as air, ground and water source heat pumps, hydro-electric, biomass, CHP and roof-mounted photovoltaics combined with solar batteries.
Sustainability
The proposed carbon reduction changes within The City of Edinburgh Council’s Main Issues Report are:
‘We want to require all buildings and conversions to meet the zero carbon / platinum standards as set out in the current Scottish Building Regulations. We will continue to require at least 50% of the carbon reduction target to be met through low and zero-carbon generating technologies.’
